Everything You Need to Know About the Fall Colors of the Smoky Mountains

Each year the Smoky Mountains put on one of the greatest shows on earth.  As fall begins, something magical happens in the trees. It is as if Mother Nature breaks out her paint set and begins to create a spectacular kaleidoscope of colors just for the visitors of Bryson City. If you’ve never experienced the fall foliage of the North Carolina Mountains, then this is the year for you to cross a Smoky Mountain fall getaway off your bucket list. This week we have everything you need to plan that perfect trip.

When to see the fall colors

While we don’t have a crystal ball, there are historically times that give visitors the best chance of seeing the vibrant fall foliage. In general, the best time to see the colors is between late September and early November. While there are several factors that go into the range, length and types of colors you’ll see, this is generally the best time of the year. It is also some of the best weather of the year. Cool temps, low humidity, and clean mountain air. What more could you ask for?

Learn why leaves change color

Have you ever wondered what makes the leaves turn colors? The change of colors each year is one of the true miracles of nature. Here’s how the magic of the fall colors of Bryson City occurs.

During the spring and summer, leaves serve as factories creating the energy necessary for the tree's growth. This process takes place within the tree’s leaves. A key element of this process is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives the leaves their green color. Along with the green pigment are yellow to orange pigments. Most of the year these colors are masked by great amounts of green coloring.  But soon those vibrant colors are revealed. How? As the length of daylight and temperature change the leaves stop making food. The Chlorphyll in the leaves begins to break down the color green disappears, and the vibrant reds, yellows, and orange colors appear.
